Reality is truly the reflection of our own personality.
Artistic images are steadily enlarging the field of semantics of communication related to photography. They are evocative, emotional, deconstructive, hyperrealist, descriptive and much more. Clearly, the best part of past and presents traditions found a way to come together through revolutionary methods that allow artists to shoot and share images and cool pictures.
Some of these artists, even today, own the ability – famously embodied by Robert Capa’s shots, among which the republican soldier dying on the battle field – to catch the exact instant when something unrepeatable and unique happens, moments before the consequences of the same act come onto the scene. This is not reportage; it is the beauty of an eye seizing the day, the “concept” of a frozen particle of time. The availability of the right technology, small hardware that can travel everywhere together with the owners, has turned millions of people into artistic witnesses. Some of these witnesses have that special skill required to grab moments whose inescapability make them unforgettable artistic evidences, and in one click they are able to cage the essence of an event, a place or an era.
These exceptional characters, like others who decide not to tie themselves to particular causes or backgrounds, know how to narrate a concept, and art is not all about forms and techniques but it is also, and particularly, a matter of ability to unleash semantics: precisely, a concept. Discussions surrounding the place of photography among other major arts can then be classified, at least partially, as old memories, and click-artists can finally be welcomed as narrators and interpreters of all those tensions, anxieties and realities that form the concept of present reality. Far from being a simple mirror of the world, good photography is an interpreter able to unveil its subjacent mechanisms while also carrying its voice: this is the soul concealed behind many cool pictures.
For many artists images, in order to convey a concept, use a cultural language an therefore, to interpret its semantics, you have to be informed – either through a poetic declaration or trough an interpretative key hidden within the image itself – of the cultural language that was used. Many young artists realize this in an autonomous, almost unaware fashion. This is the case of those who use the same form of art to create an autobiographic journey, which moves beyond the narration and becomes intimate, emotional. Inexorably, this represents further proof of the detachment between objectivity and images, which translate into a form of subjective language and meta-photographic data.
Often the angle chosen opens the door to an unusual perspective, through which the image becomes deconstructive and promotes new interpretations. Plus, techniques developed thanks to professional software allow artists to shape impossible dynamics, cool pictures, pure poetic declarations whose final products can be as destabilizing as a portrait painted by Magritte.
